Improve Your Memory with the Sleep Hypnos

The mechanics of sleep and the process by which we store and retrieve memories has from ancient times been approached through many myths and theories, but it is only recently that hard science is seriously uncovering these mysteries of the mind.

A recent study in Nature Neuroscience, by German researchers at the University of Lubeck, proved that the brain stores recent memories better during sleep than during wakefulness.

The study mentions that earlier research showed that new memories are stored temporarily in the hippocampus and don’t gel until they are put into permanent storage in the “hard drive” of the neocortex. Early studies proved that if a memory is reactivated after learning it helps the transfer to the brain’s hard drive. The researchers retriggered the memories with a scent.

Brain Sleep

The goddess Mnemosyne was the personification of memory in
Greek mythology. And the ancient Greeks invoked sleep by
appealing to the god of sleep, Hypnos, from where
the terms hypnotic and hypnotism are derived.
The Romans had a similar god named Somnus.

But, what they didn’t know and these researchers proved was that even if you retrigger the memory and move on to learn something else, the state of wakefulness makes the memories fragile and the transfer to deep memory difficult.
Their findings proved

"Much to the surprise of the researchers, the sleep group performed significantly better, retaining on average 85 percent of the patterns, compared to 60 percent for those who had remained awake."

Four Rows of Tens

Following are four rows of ten numbers each. Try to memorize as many numbers as possible in the correct sequence in 6 minutes. Then, after 10 minutes, write them all on a piece of paper.

Now, check your numbers; for each number you have written in the correct sequence give yourself 3 points, for each correct number in an incorrect sequence 1 point, no point for a missing number, and for each wrong number -2 points.

What is the sum of your points? Assume that is X.
The maximum possible score is 40 * 3 = 120.
So your score would be X / 120.

Keep in mind your score for this exercise with a tag as Four Rows of Tens. In the future posts you would be asked to remember your score for Four Rows of Tens.

New therapy introduced – to Prevent memory loss and Improve Memory

New therapy introduced – to Prevent memory loss and Improve Memory

A new therapy introduced by a team led by, Cristina Alberini, PhD, Professor of Neuroscience at Mount Sinai, which claims to prevent long-term memory loss and improve memory. This research was declared in Jan 27th issue of nature.

Mount Sinai, was ranked among the top 20 medical schools by both, National Institute of Health funding and by U. S. News & World Report.

The team analyzed that how a protein called insulin like- growth factor IGF-II enhanced memory. IGF-II is a gene found during the brain development that reduces with aging and affects the memory. This protein was injected in the hippocampus of rats, which resulted in strong long-term memory and allowed them to avoid locations where they have encountered a mild shock. According to them, IGF-II will become an important drug, for boosting memory.

As per the records, this is the first experiment of potent memory improvement through a naturally occurring factor that passed via blood- brain barrier, and hence is expected to be a promising treatment development.

As stated by, D. Alberini, the resulting data of this research will be a big breakthrough in studying and investigating the memory loss diseases like, Alzheimer's, stroke or dementia.
